How to Unarchive a Story on Instagram: Full Guide (2026)

Instagram quietly saves every story to a private archive once its 24 hours are up. That archive is handy, but there's no "Unarchive" button for stories, which confuses a lot of people. This guide explains what you can actually do with an archived story, where to find it, why some stories seem to vanish, and how to make sure future stories are saved.

Quick Answer: You Re-Share It or Add It to a Highlight

An archived story can't be moved back into the 24-hour story feed. Once it expires, it stays in your archive. You have two ways to bring it back in front of people:

  1. Re-share it as a new story. Open it in your archive, tap Share, and post it again. It goes out as a fresh story for another 24 hours.
  2. Add it to a highlight. Tap Highlight on the archived story and it sits on your profile under your bio until you remove it.

Archived posts work differently. A feed post you archived can go straight back to your grid: open it in the Posts archive, tap the three dots and choose Show on profile. It returns with its original date, likes and comments.

Finding Your Instagram Archive

The archive is private, so only you can see it. To open it on iPhone or Android:

  1. Go to your profile and tap the menu (three lines) in the top-right corner.
  2. Tap Archive.
  3. Use the title or drop-down at the top to switch between Stories archive, Posts archive and Live archive.

The stories archive opens as a grid, newest first, with the date on each tile. Some versions of the app also offer a calendar or map view, which is the fastest way to jump back to a specific event or trip rather than scrolling through months of tiles.

Re-Sharing an Archived Story

  1. In the Stories archive, tap the story you want.
  2. Tap Share at the bottom of the screen (on some versions, tap More first and choose Share to story).
  3. The story opens in the editor. Add text, stickers or music if you like, then tap Your story or Close Friends.

Instagram usually adds a date sticker to the re-shared story, showing when it was first posted or how long ago (for example "3 weeks ago"). It's there so viewers know the content isn't new. Tap the sticker to change its style, or press and drag it to the bin at the bottom of the screen to remove it before posting.

A re-shared story is treated as a brand-new post: a new 24-hour window, a new viewer list and a fresh view count. That makes it a useful way to give a strong story a second run, for instance a sale announcement or a throwback that suits the season. If you want to understand who shows up first on that new viewer list, our explainer on how Instagram orders story viewers covers it. Stories that other accounts tagged you in follow a different process, explained in our guide to reposting stories you're tagged in.

Adding an Archived Story to a Highlight

If you want a story to stay visible for longer than a day, a highlight is the better option. Highlights sit on your profile until you remove them, and adding an older story doesn't push it back into followers' story trays.

  1. Open the story in your Stories archive.
  2. Tap Highlight (the heart icon) at the bottom.
  3. Choose an existing highlight, or tap New, give it a name and tap Add.

To add many stories at once, tap the + New circle under your bio and select them from the archive grid. For covers, naming and ordering, see our full guide on building Instagram highlights from your archive.

Why an Archived Story Might Be Missing

  • Archiving was switched off. If Save story to archive was off when the story was posted, it was never saved. Unfortunately, there's no way to recover it from Instagram.
  • You deleted it. Deleted content goes to Recently Deleted (menu โ€บ Your activity โ€บ Recently deleted). Archived stories you delete stay there for up to 30 days. A story you deleted while it was still live and that never reached the archive is kept for only up to 24 hours. Tap the story, then Restore; Instagram may ask you to confirm with a code sent to your phone or email.
  • You posted it from another account. Each account has its own archive. If you manage a personal and a business profile, switch accounts and check the other one.
  • The app hasn't refreshed. Updating Instagram, or logging out and back in, fixes most cases where recent stories don't appear in the archive yet.

Turning Save Story to Archive On or Off

Story archiving is on by default, but it's worth checking, especially on older accounts or after a reinstall:

  1. Open your profile and tap the menu (three lines).
  2. Tap Archiving and downloading (in some versions it's under Settings and privacy).
  3. Turn on Save story to archive. Turn it off if you'd rather your stories disappear for good after 24 hours.

On the same screen, you can also choose to save stories to your phone's camera roll. That gives you a local copy that survives even if you later delete a story or your account. For Canadian small businesses that run regular promos in stories, keeping the archive on means every past offer, event and customer shout-out is available to reuse. If stories are a big part of how you reach customers, our story view packages for Canadian accounts and broader Instagram video view options are there for the moments you want a re-shared story to get extra visibility.

FAQ: Unarchiving Instagram Stories

Does Instagram notify anyone when you re-share an archived story?

There is no special notification for re-sharing from the archive. The re-shared story simply appears in your followers' story tray like any new story you post, so anyone who watches stories will see it there for 24 hours.

Can you unarchive or re-share several stories at once?

Not as stories. Each archived story has to be re-shared one at a time. If you want several old stories visible together, add them to a highlight instead: the + New circle on your profile lets you select many stories from the archive in one go.

Does a re-shared story keep its old views?

No. A re-shared story is a brand-new story with its own view count starting from zero. The original keeps its own numbers in the archive, although the list of individual viewer names is only available for about 48 hours after a story is first posted.

How long does Instagram keep archived stories?

Stories saved to the archive stay there with no set expiry for as long as your account exists and you don't delete them. If you delete one, it moves to Recently Deleted for up to 30 days before it is gone for good. Deleting your account removes the archive entirely, so download your information first if you want a backup.
