Instagram Image Size Checker

Check whether your image fits Instagram's recommended dimensions for feed posts, Stories, Reels, profile photos โ€” plus TikTok and YouTube sizes. Upload a file or enter dimensions manually.

How to use this tool

Select a format from the dropdown โ€” Instagram feed post, Story, Reel, profile photo, TikTok video, or YouTube thumbnail. Then either upload an image from your device or type your width and height in pixels. The checker instantly tells you whether your image fits, will be cropped, or needs upscaling. Your file never leaves the browser โ€” all checks run locally. Use the reference table below the checker for a quick-glance guide to every platform size.

Why Image Size Matters on Instagram

Posting an image at the wrong resolution leads to blurry photos, awkward cropping, or lost engagement. Instagram compresses every upload, but starting with the correct pixel dimensions minimises quality loss and ensures your content displays as intended across devices. The platform's feed algorithm also favours content that keeps viewers on screen longer โ€” and a portrait post at 1080 x 1350 takes up significantly more vertical space than a square or landscape image, giving it a natural engagement advantage.

Instagram Story and Reel Safe Zones

Stories and Reels share the same 1080 x 1920 canvas, but Instagram overlays UI elements โ€” the username bar, sticker tray, and CTA buttons โ€” on top of your content. The top 250 pixels and bottom 340 pixels are partially obscured. Keep text, faces, and important visuals inside the middle safe zone (roughly 490 px to 1580 px from the top) to avoid clipping. The same safe-zone rule applies to TikTok videos at the same 9:16 ratio. For more on Reel dimensions and duration limits, see our guide on how long Instagram Reels can be in 2026.

Getting the Most from Your Content

Optimising your image dimensions is one piece of the puzzle. Timing matters too โ€” posting during peak engagement windows can double or triple your initial reach. Check our breakdown of the best time to post on Instagram in Canada to pair the right image size with the right moment.

Once your visuals are sized correctly and your posting schedule is dialled in, growing your audience becomes the next lever. You can grow your Instagram audience with real Canadian followers to build the social proof that makes every perfectly-sized post work harder. And if your Reels are hitting the right dimensions, consider getting more reach for your Reels to accelerate the algorithm's distribution cycle. For creators also active on TikTok, check out our TikTok video views to extend the same strategy cross-platform.
